This morning finds us back in the school kitchen but this time we are learning about chemistry and biology - both macro and micro. Inspired by the Ken Burns documentary on the American Civil War that we watched in after school club yesterday afternoon, (kindly loaned to the school by our new Guv'nor, Mathew Street), we have been performing a Biology experiment to test the durability of bone, sinews and tendons, among other aspects of Human anatomy. This also has cross curricular links to History and First Aid as we focus on the practice of battlefield amputations. It is of course important that we do not burden our fine National Health Service with trivial conditions that are easily remedied in the home. Adhering to the school motto of "Waste no Want not", we will be examining the effects of roasting and slow cooking on both the byproduct of this morning's experiment and a selection of vegetables. Later on we will be delving in to the microbiological world and making our own sourdough starter with a view to baking bread next week. We will also be researching how to get rid of potential parasites in raw fish prior to our chemistry investigation in to what effects immersing it in a mild acid will have.
